The Rubber plant is an evergreen tree, native to Indonesia and China. As the 'Elastica' name hints, it was once used to make rubber before the western world found cheaper alternatives. Also 'Ficus' makes it a relative of the popular Fig tree - where you can spot commonalities between their thick glossy leaves.

In some of the wettest places in the world, where these plants grow fast and strong, locals have used Elastica Robusta to grow 'living' bridges. Their roots are twisted and shaped to create incredible strong structures, capable of withstanding heavy storms. But I wouldn't get any ideas - it can take 10-30 years to grow into something resembling a bridge.
